Mayor Hanna’s vision pays off for Appleton
Over the last 20 years, I have personally witnessed an amazing transformation: the reformation of the Appleton Flats.
The Fox River Flats in Appleton were a powerhouse of employment growth from 1870 to 1970 that carried our city through the great depression unscathed. As the importance of hydroelectric power became secondary to transportation, employment in the Flats began to wane, and by 1996 the Flats were becoming a collection of post-industrial shells.
APPLETON – After two heated debates, Tuesday night’s contest between challenger Josh Dukelow and Mayor Tim Hanna struck a new tone: positive, but contrasting, views on setting up Appleton for a bright future.
“Appleton has made tremendous progress, and we’ve had very good leadership,” Dukelow said. “But I believe new leadership is required” to keep Appleton moving in the right direction with other trailblazing cities he frequently mentions, including Austin, Des Moines or Portland.
“I deeply appreciate the endorsement by the NorthEast Wisconsin Building & Construction Trades Council,” Hanna said. “I have great respect for their values and commitment to the hard-working people of the Fox Valley.”
