Mayor Hanna’s vision pays off for Appleton

Over the last 20 years, I have personally witnessed an amazing transformation: the reformation of the Appleton Flats.
The Fox River Flats in Appleton were a powerhouse of employment growth from 1870 to 1970 that carried our city through the great depression unscathed. As the importance of hydroelectric power became secondary to transportation, employment in the Flats began to wane, and by 1996 the Flats were becoming a collection of post-industrial shells.
